The Piute Fire burns out of control more than 1,400 wildfires. The fire is burning about 550 square miles of central and northern California on July 1st, 2008. Firefighters complete around 11 percent of the 11,500-acre of the Sequoia National Forest. 19,000 firefighters and 42 other states were battling the fire in California.
1)The Big Problem:
The forest fires in California are causing air pollution that pollutes the air. The forest fires are also destroying habitats to the animals
that live in it. Humans usually are causing these big fires. They usually start by humans using smoking
materials and the failure of extinguishing campfires. To prevent fires, you should fully extinguish
fires and be more carefull with smoking materials.
2) Location:
The picture above shows where the fires are located in California.
It is in the south western part of California. Althought this map shows California,
Forest fires appear in other parts of the country, like Yellowstone in Wyoming and Idaho.
3) Impact-Economy-Houses: The impact on California Economy is that in 2003, researchers were searching that the wild fire in San Diego was more than $2 billion more than they estimated. San Diego State University shows that the actualy economic cost of wildfires are usually estimated more than what they usually are. More than 375,917 acres were destroyed in 2003 in San Diego County. 3,241 homes were also destroyed. Some other impacts are:
Lost Business: $365 Billion
Medical Costs: $ 10
Cal Trans: $ 15
Watershed Protection: $ 47
Infrastructure: $ 147.3
Some other impacts are that the forest fires are producing threatened or extinct animal species. The forest fires are destroying their homes so they have no where to live, and nowhere to get food.
4) Solution:
Solutions to the wild fires in California is to restore forest to their natural fire-adapted structures and processes.
Recent research inticates that intensive treatment on 10-20% of landscape will be effective. Smoke management
is essential to the restoration of planning and implementation. Lowering the the smoking materials humans are using
will lower the chances of a forest fire happening once again.
This is a picture of before the forest fire (left) and the after picture (right) in California. As you can see from the picture, that the forest fires are making a huge difference on the land. It went from green and home like, to brown and nothing.
